According to Autodata, in March, the U.S. auto market sold light vehicles of 1453038 units, an increase of 3.4% from 1404699 units in March 2012, which is also the highest monthly sales since reaching a peak of 1.48 million units in August 2007; Cumulative sales of light vehicles in the United States in the first quarter were 3689089 units, compared with 3467609 units in the same period of 2012, a year-on-year increase of 6.4%. Although the double-digit ratio has slowed from many months in 2012, March is usually a month with a high contrast base.
In March, U.S. sedan sales fell slightly by 1% year-on-year to 759172 units, while light trucks (including SUVs and pickups) increased by 9% year-on-year to 693866 units.
Seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) were 15.25 million units based on the expected annual sales rate for the month. This is the fifth consecutive month since 2008 that the U.S. auto market has SAARed more than 15 million units. Sales were 15.56 million units in November 2012, 15.38 million units in December, 15.3 million units in January 2013, and 15.36 million units in February.
